AEC New Visions health students

Students in the Adirondack Educational Center New Visions Health program recently had a unique opportunity to explore respiratory therapy through an immersive, hands-on learning experience at Adirondack Medical Center.

During the visit, members of the hospital’s Respiratory Therapy team provided students with an in-depth lesson on lung anatomy, function, and mechanical ventilation. Using a set of pig lungs connected to a ventilator, students observed firsthand how air moves through the lungs and how ventilators support breathing in clinical settings.

In addition to the ventilation demonstration, respiratory therapists introduced a bronchoscope, a specialized instrument used to view the inside of the airways and lungs. Students were able to see the interior of the lungs through the scope and, under supervision, manipulate the bronchoscope themselves. The interactive component allowed students to gain practical insight into procedures commonly performed in respiratory and critical care settings.

“Giving opportunities for our students to work hand in hand with our local agencies and businesses is a priority at FEH BOCES,” said Kurt Munson, Principal of the Adirondack Educational Center. “With a long-standing relationship between the Adirondack Educational Center and the Adirondack Medical Center, we are dedicated to providing a high level of healthcare-related experiences that will be mutually beneficial.”

New Visions Health Instructor Kelly Wright emphasized how experiences like this deepen student learning.

“This was an amazing experience for our students to apply what we are learning in the classroom to a hands-on setting,” Wright said. “As the year progresses and our learning builds on itself, students are able to connect more of what we cover in class to their experiences shadowing in the hospital, including this excellent opportunity with respiratory therapy.

“It creates a meaningful bridge between education and the healthcare field for our students.”

The experience was met with enthusiasm from students, many of whom expressed excitement about seeing real-world healthcare applications beyond the classroom. Opportunities like this are a cornerstone of the New Visions Health program, which connects students with healthcare professionals and provides authentic, career-focused learning experiences.

Through partnerships with regional healthcare providers, AEC’s New Visions Health program helps students explore high-demand careers while developing foundational knowledge, technical skills, and professional confidence. The Adirondack Educational Center remains committed to expanding experiential learning opportunities that prepare students for success in post-secondary education and the workforce.
