Summer Trades camp Collage: Students working in Culinary, Auto Technology, Costmetology, and Health occupations

From July 14–18, middle school students from across the region came together at Franklin‑Essex‑Hamilton BOCES’ North Franklin Educational Center to take part in the annual Summer Trades Camp, a weeklong hands-on experience designed to introduce students to in-demand trade skills.

The camp welcomed students entering grades 6‑8 in the upcoming school year from the Brushton-Moira, Chateaugay, Malone, St. Regis Falls, and Salmon River school districts, as well as homeschoolers residing in those areas. Over the course of the week, students explored two career areas of their choice from a lineup that included Auto Technology, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, and Health Occupations.

Participants engaged in practical, project-based learning led by skilled instructors, offering them a unique chance to get their hands dirty and experience what it’s like to work in these fields. Whether it was changing a tire in the auto shop, learning knife skills in the kitchen, practicing braiding techniques, or closing a wound, campers came away with new skills and, in many cases, newfound aspirations.

The camp also served as a community-building opportunity, allowing students from different districts to connect, collaborate, and make lasting friendships while learning in a fun atmosphere.

A special note of thanks goes to the Adirondack Foundation, and other community partners, whose generous support helped make this year’s camp possible.

With its blend of real-world skill building, peer connection, and community backing, Summer Trades Camp continues to stand out as a meaningful and memorable stepping stone for young students curious about their futures.
