THE DISTRICT

The Tupper Lake Central School District encompasses 280 square miles including all of the town of Altamont in southern Franklin County and portions of the towns of Colton and Piercefield in St. Lawrence County. The District has five administrators, 90 teachers and 60 support staff.

The District's two educational facilities are located in the village of Tupper Lake. Construction projects and renovations have been conducted periodically over the past 20 years in connection with both buildings which are well maintained and equipped.  The most recent project, now underway, calls for additions and renovations totaling $13.2 million.

L.P. Quinn Elementary School, with an enrollment of about 600 students in grades K-6, is situated on 292 acres and offers a spectacular view of the Adirondack High Peaks. The soon to be constructed, Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks will be located on part of the L. P. Quinn school site.  In 1988, the Elementary School was named a National School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. In 1996, it was recognized by being recommended by the State to repeat this honor. Programs of special note include an extended day kindergarten, McInnis assured readiness for reading, enrichment classes, Odyssey of the Mind, chorus, band and drama, as well as intramural sports and a computer lab and Local Area Network which brings Internet access to most classrooms.

The Middle/High School, having an enrollment of about 600 students in grades 7-12, offers the traditional courses and sequences as well as accelerated classes in core courses, advanced placement, an automated library, three computer labs, two with Internet access and chorus, band and drama programs which have attained local, regional and State-wide recognition.

The District takes advantage of a wide range of services for its students and staff through the Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES.

THE COMMUNITY

Tupper Lake is located in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. Tupper Lake, together with Saranac Lake and Lake Placid comprise the Tri-Lakes area.

To people who enjoy the outdoors, the area offers a wide variety of activities and facilities. For the winter sports enthusiast, Tupper Lake provides downhill skiing at Big Tupper Ski Area, numerous cross-country and snowmobile trails, and a school-owned ice rink. For the avid golfer, there is the Tupper Lake Country Club, an 18-hole championship golf course.

Other outdoor recreation includes boating, fishing and swimming available in numerous nearby lakes, ponds and rivers; camping, hiking and hunting are also popular.

Tupper Lake is a close-knit community of 5,000 permanent residents. It was settled in the late 1800's by French Canadians drawn to the area's timber resources; lumbering remains a vital industry. OWD, a local plastics firm, employees 210 residents. It is the largest company of its kind in the eastern portion of the United States. Sunmount Developmental Center is the largest employer in the school district. Sunmount provides services to developmentally disabled adults and some children at its main campus and at group homes in a five county area.
