New Changes in Teaching Assistant Requirements

With the recent enactment of the No Child Left Behind legislation (NCLB), teaching assistants now must achieve a qualifying score on the New York State Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (NYSATAS).

All candidates who apply for a credential to work as a teaching assistant after February 2, 2004, must submit evidence to a school district of having achieved a satisfactory level of performance on the NYSATAS. The NYSATAS will cover the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, and instructional support.   The next NYSATAS test will be offered on July 12, 2008 in Potsdam.

A candidate for a teaching assistant certification after 2/2/2004, who already holds a NYS teaching certification in any title, is not required to take this exam.

The National Evaluation Systems Inc. has developed a website for all testing information, registration and fees, test dates and locations, as well as the   preparation guides. The website is now available at, http://www.nystce.nesinc.com/ or call 413-256-2895 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES will be offering Test Preparation workshops on July 7, 2008.  To register for the Test Preparation workshop, please complete and return the registration form with the $25.00 fee.
