Special Education


For students with disabilities a variety of services are available serving ages birth through 21, in the least restrictive environments. Placement is determined by the student’s management needs, academic, social and physical profile.  Special Education services are as follows:

15:1 - Secondary Program - ages 14-21.  Students who lag academically with low behavioral management needs. Designed to continue with academic performance and concentrate on preparing the student for independence and self-determination. 

12:1+1 - (one teacher to 12 students with one Teaching Assistant) - ages 3-21. Students who require greater management due to personal/social and academic challenges. Designed to build personal/social adjustments and gain life skills. 

6:1+1/8:1+1 - (one teacher to six/eight students with one Teaching Assistant) - ages 5-21. Students with severe behavioral/emotional challenges or significant eduational disabilities. Designed to provide intensive individual attention through management/academic structure with integrated counseling. 

12:1+1:3 - (one teacher to 12 students with one paraprofessional for every 3 students) - ages 3-21. Students with severe multiple disabilities. Designed to develop student abilities to perform at maximum level of independence in a community setting. 

Special Education Teacher/Consultant 

Special Education Teacher/Consultant – May be either direct or indirect services to a student with disabilities.  

Direct   custom designed individual or group instruction provided to aid the student with disabilities in benefiting from the student’s regular education classes. 

Indirect – custom designed assistance to regular education teachers to assist them with adjusting the learning environment and/or modifying their instructional methods to meet the individual needs of students with disabilities who attend their classes. 

Assistive Technology Services 

Services include Assistive Technology evaluations performed within the district setting, and Assistive Technology services as a related service delivered to students within the district setting at the Committee on Special Education recommended frequency and duration.   Training and equipment set-up can be provided if requested.

Transition Services 

1. Work Placement:

Students are placed in community based work sites to experience realistic on-the-job work exposure to develop career awareness, skill development and work readiness.    Students are supervised by BOCES staff and work site employees.  Students may receive 1:1 job coaching or intermittent job coaching as determined appropriate by the BOCES Transition Coordinator.

2.   Transitional Liaison:

Services include transition coordination for students with disabilities served by the district.   Support for referral to appropriate adult service providers, primarily the office of Vocational Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID), will be provided.

3.   Vocational Assessments:

Vocational Assessments are required for students with disabilities.  Districts may request Level 2 Basic, Level 2 Extended and/or Level 3 for students not serviced in a BOCES program.
