School districts find it increasingly economical to share staff with neighboring school districts as they strive to provide students with a broad comprehensive educational program. The sharing of instructional personnel enables school districts to expand the number and variety of offerings available to students in a cost-effective manner. State Education Department regulations require that shared staff serve two or more school districts. Districts are eligible to receive BOCES state aid on a maximum of three days (60%) of shared staff service. Not all teaching areas are approvable through the BOCES.

Some of the shared services that BOCES currently offers include the following:

• Art
• Music
• Nurse
• Physical Education
• School Psychologist
• Speech Improvement
• Teacher of the Deaf & Hearing Impaired
• Teacher of the Visually Impaired
• Technology Specialist
• Technology Teacher

Additional Shared Services include:

• Advanced Placement Courses
• Agriculture
• Bilingual/ESL
• Business and Office
• Computer Instruction
• English (Advanced)
• Environmental Education Coordinator
• Foreign Language
• Gifted and Talented
• Health Education
• Home and Career Skills
• Library Media Specialist
• Migrant Tutorial
• Mathematics (Remedial & Advanced)

One advantage of these services is that they are provided to the students in the home districts. This allows the students to continue their regular education programs with their peers with a minimum of interruptions.

Individuals may be scheduled to be present on a regular basis for a part of each day, certain hours or days of each week, or a certain period of a school year. Costs for these services are pro-rated to districts on the basis of participation.
